FACTS ABOUT LIONS

The International Association of Lions Clubs is today the largest service club organisation in the world with over 1.3 million members in more than 46,000 clubs in 202 countries.

The International Association of Lions Clubs is the largest non-governmental organisation associated with the United Nations and was called upon by the United Nations and the World Health Organization to raise funds for an international program of sight conservation. In 1990 the International Association of Lions Clubs began a program of fundraising that they called “Campaign Sight First” in order to prevent 40 million cases of blindness worldwide. Over US$ 148 million have been raised by Lions all over the world for this program. In the last three years, Lions worldwide have raised an additional US$200 million towards “Campaign Sight First II”.

Through Lions Club International Foundation (LCIF) Lions contribute to disaster funds bringing ongoing relief to disaster-hit areas worldwide and work in partnership with UNICEF, WHO and UNESCO to provide worldwide aid.

ROYAL ENDORSEMENT

MD 105 (UK) Lions have a “royal origin”, courtesy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, who sent her equerry Colonel Edward Wyndham (later Lord Leconfield) to Canada to thank the Lions for providing substantial funds for children orphaned during the Blitz. Colonel Wyndham was so impressed with the Canadian Lions that he decided a Club should be established in England. Subsequently, Windsor (Ontario) Lions Club sponsored London (Host), as the first Club in the British Isles. Lord Leconfield was the Charter President, and meticulous in attending every meeting, where his tall, genial presence added distinction to their functions The Patron of Lions Club of British Isle is Her Royal Highness The Countess of Wessex.
